I am continually reading articles on marketing a newly published e-book.   After publishing “The Trials of Virtue” on Amazon http://amzn.to/yrbBOX  I have gotten quite involved in the social media networks including Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.    The sales have been OK but I would like to hear some ideas that can take this to the next level.

I found this link   http://bookmarketingmaven.typepad.com/resources/promote-your-book-with-social-media-marketing.html to be quite interesting but I don’t know much about it.

Any comments would be appreciated!

About jeffjosephauthor

In spite of being a husband and father, I have always been a daydreamer. I was that guy in high school algebra with the far away expression on his face, and no I wasn't thinking about how to apply mathematics to save the world. I was thinking about the girl of my dreams and how I would make her mine. True love and the inherent difficulty in finding it are what I daydream about the most, and to me writing a book is merely daydreaming and capturing your thoughts in print. It makes them more real and provides the opportunity for others to share in them as well. And so I hope you will. Follow me on twitter @author_jeff

  1. Have you done a Face book page for your book. There are quite a few groups of authors on Face book as well. There are people who help set up book promotions with a chain of blogs with give aways. Do you utilize the groups on Linkedin? What type of information are you looking for? I may be able to narrow down what I can pass along. Donna

Thank you so much for your comment. I have not used Linkedin yet but I am on Facebook and I have gotten into several authors groups. At this point I am looking for any marketing ideas that may have been more successful than others.

    Hi Jeff,

thanks for following me on Twitter – returning the favor. Welcome to the wild world of social media! Do youself a huge favor and head over to The Writer’s Guide to Epublishing, known as WG2E. We just started a street team over there, a group of writers helping each other. And there is a new sister site The Reader’s Guide to Ebooks, where we will be featured in loads of ways. The WG2E address is below – you can link to their other site from there. Take care,

  3. Watch for a book soon to be released on Amazon Kindle by Jeff (that should be easy to remember!) Bennington, entitled “The Indie Author’s Guide to the Universe.” I have a draft copy and it looks like some very good and tested ways to promote you book. In the mean time check out his blog, The Writing Bomb.

Thanks Christina. I really appreciate it.

  5. Have you thought of a blog tour? If you can find some good interactive blogs, you might be able to drum up a following

  6. I understand that one of the best things we can do is get more of our stuff out there, that if you’ve only got the one book yet, spend your time and effort getting more written. THEN give a push and consider spending some money on advertising (online). Save up those revenues from your current book and use them to push your later ones.

Another suggestion is donating all your revenues for the first book to a charity of some kind. Besides doing good in the world, it help with good press. People will often buy a book to help the cause. If they read it and like it, then you’ve got a good audience for subsequent books.

Anyway, that’s what I learned at a writing conference I attended a week ago. Good luck!

      Hi Donna
I’m about 50% complete with my second novel. I have been told the same thing by several other authors that have contacted me on Facebook.

I am planning on donating the revenues from my first novel The Trials of Virtue soon after I get the second one published.

      I really appreciate your comments.

Thanks for the link on promoting ebooks, it’s always good to get new ideas. I’ve had some luck improving sales and hits with reviews from online book review sites. It takes some work requesting-and waiting for the review, but not only does it boost hits and sales, it gives me quotes to use for advertising. Here’s a great link to get you started:
http://www.stepbystepselfpublishing.net/reviewer-list.html I’m also agreed that the more books you have out there the more you can promote one off the other. I’m working on a sequel to my first book, The Shell Keeper, but also going to publish another,Framed, which is an unrelated title. Keep the tips coming, Jeff!

    • Jeff says:

Thanks Robin for the post. I’m currently working on some reviews with a few different sites but I will check out the link that you included.

  8. Some terrific resources here. Thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions. That’s what I love about blogs. The resulting conversation is often as good/enlightening as the initial post.

I’m surprised no one has really focused on the value of blogs. I have 2 blogs. One to promote myself as a writer and talk about the writing life. Readers are interested in this and writers are readers, too! And the other blog is a prelude to my upcoming book about chocolate travel. So it’s building the interest in the topic and the book, prior to launch. My current post on the writer’s blog is about blogging, so you might like to take a look.

    Hey Jeff,

After three years promoting authors via book tours with Women on Writing the one thing I can say is that exposure = sales…and marketing takes time. You want to build buzz. Bloggers are great, if they have a following. Reviews raise your book on the charts, if they are Amazon. etc… and connecting with your target market through guest posts, etc… will pull more readers. I’m happy to share what I’ve seen–just email me.

  10. Hi Jeff,

After 20+ years in advertising and marketing and now the big push on Social Media, people are spending so many hours without the ROI (Return on Investment) that they need. Check out Apex Pacific. They offer software packages that operate/automate all your social media for you, saving you hundreds of hours, which in turn leaves you with more time for your creativity. I, in no way work for this company. I have used their software and have been very pleased. Trying to maintain your social media contacts is exhausting. Flooding the market is what gets you noticed and that is where this company gives you the edge. You can still choose to maintain personally a select few that you want to handle. It doesn’t hurt to check out their site and make an educated desicion after your visit.:)

  12. Hi,
I just joined your site and so far I really like it. It looks like what you’re doing, along with the comments above, is going to get you set with the social media outlets. I clicked on the link you left and will check out the site momentarily.
I hope you have a great day and feel free to check out my blog anytime.

  13. Hi Jeff, followed the link you left, and enjoyed it, even following links from that site. Sounds like your on the right track, takes time. We are also new at all of this, we are trying the traditional route of publishing even though we’ve heard you have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting picked up by an agent. Top 1% leaves an author with a lot to think about. I don’t know if this will help, but when we first started we attended a workshop locally, and the gentlemen Will Keaner was speaking about different things an author can do with marketing to help sales and to get the word out about his/her book. We were so new, (green) at the time, that we thought, why would an author do that? Now we see, that it’s almost essential to follow as a rule. One was giving away free copies of your book. The old word of mouth sort of phil., and it seems to work. Critiquing is another great avenue to put your book and name out. I also seen that you are considering Linkedin, which like twitter, facebook and others is a great avenue, to get your name and book out. Another thing that might help, even though indirectly, is a few of the writers websites that also have links in every way to help authors. Writers Digest, Writers Market, Fanstory…We wish you the best with your sales and will try to pick up a copy for ourselves, as we love supporting our fellow authors while on their journey.

Hey! I’m also a writer and am about to take my third Social Media Marketing course, so if you have any questions, I certainly would be more than happy to try to help you out. I’m hardly an expert, but between my course and reading article online (socialmediatoday.com is a great site) I’ve learned a great deal about this area of Marketing.

  15. Hello Jeff: I realize this is an old post, but my goodness, what a valuable one it appears to be. Asking a simple question garnered you quite a number of intriguing responses.

I hope you will have time to check out my blog. It appears you might be a like-minded soul, i.e. a hopeless romantic. I am a submissive, and write about the Dominant/submissive dynamic (no, please don’t compare me to Fifty, not even for a nano-second). It is, at its core, the ultimate in love and romance and devotion.

    Warm regards,

  19. i didn’t know you were into cooking! I know some great cooking sites. As a writer, you are not a becoming John Steinbeck, but you already knew that. Maybe romance is your thing, but the genre isn’t going to get your name known very well. and there is a difference between being slutty and romantic, so your novels doesn’t quite fit the romance genre. enough said. Wishing you well.

There аre, in fact, some negative factors to freеlancing.
